The Executive Function & Emotional Regulation Skills Program is an in-person coaching program for children and teens ages 6+ in Gilbert. At Family Matters Counseling, we teach practical skills for emotional regulation, impulsivity, transitions, focus, task completion, planning, organization, and follow-through.
We begin with a 53-minute clinical assessment and a personalized plan from Emily Sanchez, LCSW. A behavioral coach then meets with your child or teen for 30 minutes each week. Emily meets with parents about every 4-6 weeks for parent counseling and/or coaching, either in person or by telehealth.
Most plans last around 12 weeks. Some children need more time to learn and practice the skills, while others continue with occasional maintenance sessions. The weekly coaching sessions are not psychotherapy. We offer child and teen psychotherapy separately through a licensed therapist.

Parenting is hard. It gets even harder when your child understands what needs to happen but cannot use that knowledge in the moment. Strong emotional reactions, impulsive choices, difficult transitions, and unfinished tasks can turn ordinary parts of the day into repeated stress for the whole family.
Parents come to us when they notice:
emotional reactions that feel much bigger than the situation
impulsive responses before their child has time to pause;
stressful transitions between activities, places, or expectations;
difficulty recovering after frustration or a change in plans;
homework that is delayed, forgotten, or left unfinished;
difficulty starting tasks without repeated reminders;
trouble following multi-step directions;
routines that break down even when the child knows them;
lost papers, supplies, or personal items; or
inconsistent follow-through at school or home.
You know your child is capable. The challenge is helping those skills show up when emotions are high, a task feels overwhelming, or plans change. We start by identifying what your child needs to practice instead of giving every family the same program.
The program combines a clinical assessment, direct skills practice, and parent involvement. Most plans average 12 weeks, but the timeline follows the child. We continue coaching or add maintenance sessions when more practice is needed.
Emily Sanchez, LCSW, begins with a 53-minute clinical assessment. She uses what she learns to create a plan around your child's needs and the skills the behavioral coach will teach.
A behavioral coach meets with your child or teen in person in Gilbert for 30 minutes each week. The sessions are active and skills based. Your child learns a skill, practices it, and works on using it at home, at school, and during everyday routines. This is coaching, not therapy.
Emily meets with parents for 53 minutes about every 4-6 weeks. The sessions include parent counseling, coaching, or both based on what your family needs. You can attend in person or by telehealth
Every child starts in a different place. We build the plan around the areas that create the most stress or interfere most with daily life.
Some of the skills we teach:
noticing emotional escalation and strong reactions;
practicing calming and problem-solving strategies;
pausing before acting on an impulse;
handling frustration and transitions with more flexibility;
starting a task when it feels boring, difficult, or overwhelming;
breaking a large task into smaller steps;
planning, prioritizing, and managing time;
organizing school materials and personal belongings;
using routines, reminders, planners, or visual supports;
remembering and following multi-step directions;
following through with less adult prompting over time.
Your child does not need a formal diagnosis. We work with children and teens ages 6+ who struggle with emotions, focus, task completion, impulsivity, or transitions. ADHD can be part of the picture, but an ADHD diagnosis is not required.

Family Matters is a licensed counseling practice that also offers skills coaching. Each person on the team has a clear role.

Families should know exactly which service they are choosing and who provides it.
Executive function coaching is direct, skills-based work. Weekly sessions focus on teaching a skill, practicing it, and using it during routines, responsibilities, and stressful moments.
Psychotherapy is clinical care from a licensed provider. We have a licensed therapist who works with children and teens, including young people with ADHD and other concerns. Individual psychotherapy sessions are 53 minutes and cost $150.
Emily's clinical assessment and the behavioral coach's weekly sessions are separate parts of the program. The assessment does not turn coaching into therapy. We explain each role from the start so you know what your child is receiving.
